Tuesday Tidbits

ginger reading the news

Today in pet news it is

National Holistic Pet Day

Colleen Paige from Animal Miracle Foundation says to celebrate by:

* Feeding your pet natural foods, treats and supplements.

* Exercise regularly with your pet, and don't forget the massage.

* Minimize the amount of chemicals used in the home to minimize your pet's exposure to them.

Me personally I think that means you are supposed to eat yummy natural snacks from Petco, get a puppy massage and take a siesta.

Tear Jerker Mantastic Monday

Grab a tissue, this post will require it!

There are men and women everyday that go out and put their life in harms way to protect and fight for our freedom.  They sometimes give all they have, no regrets.  This is man gave his life fighting for us.  He left behind a family and a best friend.

Image: Jon T. Tumilson

Petty Officer 1st Class Jon T. Tumilson was killed along with others on August 6 in Afghanistan.  He died going to help others when his  Chinook helicopter was shot down.   30 troops perished including him.

Navy SEAL Killed In Afghanistan Mourned By Dog

Hawkeye, Jon’s faithful and loyal friend , walked up to the casket at the beginning of the service and then dropped down with a heaving sigh as about 1,500 mourners watched Hawkeye accompanying his master until the end.

Hawkeye was such a huge part of Tumilson’s life that Tumilson’s family followed the dog down the aisle as they entered the service in front of a capacity crowd in the gymnasium at the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock Community School. Hawkeye then followed Tumilson’s good friend, Scott Nichols, as Nichols approached the stage to give a speech. As Nichols prepared to memorialize his friend, Hawkeye dutifully laid down near the casket.

Hawkeye, you are much more worthy than a Mantastic Monday post.

Thank you for your love and loyal service to one of our fallen heros

National Dog Day is TODAY! Woof!

It’s also Free For All Friday…

I am so excited that there is a day just for me and my fellow four legged friends!  This makes me howl with excitement!  Not to wag my own tail, but many dogs like myself deserve this day because we offer so much to our humans.

I know for me, I am always there with unconditional love.  I came into my moms life at a very difficult time.  She was very sad and I was there, loving her through it.  I did it not because I had to, but I wanted to and when her heart was broke, so was mine.

So what can you humans do today to honor the dogs  in your life??  So glad you want to know, I have lots of things to suggest!

Plan an outing.   Yesterday my mom took me to town for a walk on our local green way.  Then it was a trip to Petco for my favorite snacks and Dairy Queen on the way home for their special dog treat!  Or you could host a barbecue or picnic that includes other “dog friends.” Your dog will enjoy your undivided attention.  Feeling adventurous? Try a getaway to a dog-friendly hotel or resort.

Shop for toys. Dogs can be rough on their toys, and tattered toys pose a risk to your dog’s health. Make a habit of tossing the old toys and replacing with a new batch of intriguing toys each National Dog Day.

Prepare for emergencies. Show your love by taking a pet first-aid course.  Also, spend five minutes updating your cell phone contact list to include the numbers for your veterinarian, an after-hours veterinarian and poison control center. Plug your dog’s microchip number into your cell.

Volunteer. Rescue groups and shelters need your help, even if you can’t make a long-term commitment of time or money.  Find a way to help your local shelter or rescue group. There are struggling individual rescue groups across the country.

Donate. Honor National Dog Day by giving $5 to your local shelter. Many shelters and rescue groups also list needed items, such as blankets and toys.

Adopt.  If you are looking for a new pet, adopt from your local shelter instead of buying from a pet store or puppy mill.   I myself was a shelter pooch and my mom says I am the most mantastic dog ever!

Since National Dog Day fell on our Free For All Friday, for those who leave a comment, I will put you in drawing and for the winner I will donate a gift card in your name to a shelter in your area.   That way they can buy much needed supplies!

Happy National Dog Day!!

Thursday Travels, My Day In Pictures

I thought it would be fun to showcase one of my trips to town!

We had to stop to get the Jeep an oil change.  I was carefully guarding the family the entire time!  No one walked by with me noticing them!

Next stop, the green way to get some exercise!  We are having some barktastic weather today, so we strolled for about  a mile!

Whew, all that walking made this pooch very thirsty, so mom gave me some watered down Sonic Cherry Coke!  Can we all say YUM!

We then went to the most awesome place on the planet earth, PETCO!

Can we all say it in unison….HEAVEN!

Banana Mutt Cookies

It’s Scrumptious Sunday!

I think this is beginning to be one of my favorite posts  for the week because mom gets busy in the kitchen making goodie for the four legged kind and I get busy being a taste tester!  Yum!

IMG_5118

This week since mom had some bananas laying around and  required some much needed attention, she pulled out the trusty  Three Dog Bakery cookbook out and started looking through to find a recipe that contained bananas!  Didn’t take long to find the perfect thing to get my tail waggin’!

Banana Mutt Cookies

  IMG_5121

Here is what the recipe called for:

1 1/2 cups ripe mashed bananas

1/2 teaspoon  vanilla

3 cups oats

1/2 cup chopped peanuts (we used 1/4 cup peanut butter)

1/4 cup applesauce

IMG_5125

Put all the ingredients in a bowl….

IMG_5127

Mix all that yummy goodness thoroughly…

IMG_5128

Drop spoonfuls of the mixture to an ungreased baking sheet and bake in a preheated 350 oven for 15 minutes.

IMG_5123

Then try to patiently wait for them to get done…

IMG_5129

After they are done baking, cool on rack before serving this to your wonderful and most deserving pooch or pooches!!  This recipe made about 24 of these scrumptious smelling, tummy tickling, mouthwatering cookies!  A must try recipe!!   The only thing I have against these cookies…is the name!  There is nothing MUTT about ‘em!

All dog alert here….don’t tell mom that I barked about this, but I think there is talk of a Three Dog Bakery cookbook give-a-way coming up soon!  :o)

Silly Saturday

Some say I am picky.  I say, I know when I want something, and it is usually NOW!

IMG_5095

I love my dog food…well at least certain pieces out of it.  See those lovely green and lighter pieces in there.  Those are my favs!

IMG_5091

When my family does not move quick enough to empty my bowl of the pieces that I do not eat, I start throwing them out of the bowl one by one.  I usually try to make the most noise that is possible to alert them that my food needs attention.  Alas, sometimes they do not hear it and then there seems to be a bigger mess to clean up!

IMG_5089IMG_5093

Don’t think this is being wasteful, I know there are dogs starving out there, so I would not do this if I knew there was not a chocolate lab that will eat anything that is set in front of her!  Meet Macy…(sorry the picture is blurry, mom was holding her food in her hand while trying to take the picture).

IMG_5106

Look at my lip smacking happiness!  My food, just like I like it, with green pieces.

 IMG_5114

Dad says I am spoiled, mom thinks I am silly.  I know that I have a very distinguished palate!  HA!

Happy Silly Saturday!

Free Apps That I Love!

It’s Free For All Friday!

The iPhone is an amazing thing that my mom owns.  She is always going on and on about cool apps that she has for me!

I will be honest, I am not a fan of her fancy smanzy iPhone…when that thing is in her hands she is busy paying way to much attention to it.  I feel that it gets in the way of things I want to do.  You know things like, playing fetch, being petted, and handed snacks so my tummy stays very happy!  Hmpth, not a fan of the phone, just sayin’.

With that being said, she loves this app named My Dog.  Here is a snip of what the icon looks like, (granted I would love to see a Chihuahua as the picture, Labs get all the glory).

image

She loves it because she has all my information at her finger tips in the event that she may need it quickly.  She has put all my information into this little app.  She had my medical history, the medications that I take on a regular basis, vet visit (grrrrrrowl) , and my shot record (another growl).  She even had the nerve to put my weight into that thing…I bet if I had a high tech gadget she would be pretty snippy if I put her weight in it!

I will say, that this app is pretty cool with helping out my social life!  There is a place where you can find dog parks while you are traveling and also dog friendly placed that allow pets!!  Pretty cool!  I love leaving my mark at all the places I visit!

Mom says this app is very travel friendly.   It has airline and train information, dog friendly hotel finder and there are also travel tips for you and your pooch.   Pretty handy if you are always on the go with your four legged friend.

The really cool thing about this app?  It’s free!  I am not a fan of  mom’s phone, but I do love an app that is tail waggin’ awesome and made just for me, cause come on, It’s all about me!!!  HA!

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

We are real high tech around here!!  For the Fridays giveaway mom wrote the two names that entered on a piece of paper and then threw them out for me to pick.  The first one I went to was Robin!!  YAY Robin!

IMG_5066 IMG_5067 IMG_5070

Mom thought that since only two people entered the drawing and since I think that Ginger Bears are soooooo yummy, that she would send some out to Stacey as well!  YAY, Stacey!   So if y’all will leave a comment with your  address or you can email my mom at jpdbj (at) dtccom (dot) net she will get them out to you quicker than you can bark!

Vacation has worn me slap out and mom was been lagging too, so my Tail Waggin’ Wednesday was forgotten about yesterday…whoopies and then Thursday Travels kind of got forgotten as well!!   No worries though, I am back to my ‘ol tail waggin self and am ready to go with my next few posts!!!  So check back in for some fun things to come, and send your friends over too….kind of  like Red Rover….send your friends right on over!  HA!

Tuesday Tidbit Vacation Wrap-Up!

We finally made it home from a fabulous vacation!   I love traveling with the family and especially love getting  some warmth from the sun while traveling…

IMG_4922

We finally made it to the cabin in Pigeon Forge and the first thing me and my sister Maggie did was run outside to checkout the view.

IMG_4929

Here are the views from the third floor balcony and they are heavenly!

IMG_4926 IMG_4927 IMG_4928IMG_4969

Also, naps are a must on vacays…here I am enjoying pure luxury and sweet dreams…

IMG_4966

Until my older brother started bothering me.  I was like “mom, please stop him!” but she kept laughing cause she thought it was funny.  Hmpth….

IMG_4962

Even Maggie snuck in a few naps.  NOBODY messes with Maggie when she takes a nap.  Don’t let that cute bow in her hair fool you, she is a big grouch pot when she gets messed with.  We have nicknamed her Walter because of  her growls!

       IMG_4977

The next morning brought beautiful views again….

IMG_5040

And Krispy Kremes….YUM!

IMG_5000

The most exciting thing about the trip was the black bears!!!   The family made fun of  my mom the first night when she saw them…I believed her because I could smell them and wanted to skit after them, but the rest of the family made fun of her cause they thought she was seeing things….UNTIL they pulled up to the cabin one night and there sat a huge mama bear and her cub!    Poor mom!

 IMG_5058

It was a rough night because the bears were not leaving and also were tormenting the next door neighbors garbage.  The fella next door walked outside and almost ran right into one.  Of course that made it where no one would take me or Walter Maggie outside to do our business….trust me, it was a long night!!

After that mom would not take me for long walks anymore either…it was, “hurry up and get it done” and then I had to sniff for the bears from inside the truck or the cabin….I was like “let me at ‘em!!”

IMG_5063

Did you see that cute little black bear toy in the truck….mom got me that so I could skit those bad bears from the comfort and safety of the indoors!! HA!

Oh well…the vacation was fun while it lasted!!

P.S. Mom said that we would also draw for the winner for the Ginger Bear Snacks in a little bit, so check back in later!!!

P.S.S.  Thanks Ginger for blogging for me while I was gone….you are a paws-a-tivley wonderful cousin!!
